Critical update for macOS Big Sur and Catalina from Apple

Apple shared the macOS Big Sur and Catalina update package. New updates follow Monterey 12.2.1.

Apple has released new updates for users who are still running Big Sur or Catalina on their Mac. The macOS Big Sur 11.6.4 and Catalina security fix follows last week’s Monterey 12.2.1 security and Bluetooth battery offload bug fix.

The security update macOS 11.6.4 and Catalina 2022-002 is starting to be deployed through OTA. To check if the Mac you’re using is eligible, you can follow the System Preferences > Software Update path and install it if the new update appears.

The updates came after Apple released macOS 11.6.3 at the end of January with a series of bugs and security fixes. Apple has not detailed security patches with the latest updates, but it may include fixes monterey received last week.

Speaking of Monterey, with macOS 12.2.1, Apple fixed a frustrating Bluetooth battery offloading error that MacBook users were dealing with. However, Apple said that the fix for this problem, which is seen by users of both M1 and Intel MacBooks, is only for Intel MacBooks.

macOS Big Sur 11.6.4 came just days after the release of macOS Monterey 12.2.1, which addresses a flaw that could allow arbitrary code execution on WebKit. Apple said it was aware of a report that the problem may have been actively exploited.

In addition, macOS 12.3 is in its second beta with Universal Control, which is currently officially in testing.

Let’s remind you again that the security updates available for global download by Apple are for macOS Big Sur and Catalina. If the update does not appear on your computer yet, we recommend waiting a while longer, but installing it as quickly as possible.
